Sustainable Earth – science, policy, society

Image
Earth Day’ was first celebrated in 1970 and gave voice to many concerns about the global environment. Scientists played a major role in drawing attention to our impact on the planet and millions marched in response. Across the world nations, cities, businesses and communities began to address environmental issues. The 1970s and 80s saw the rise of environmental science, environmental protection agencies, environmental policy and environmental assessment with the worst pollution of air, water and land being addressed. But deeper issues about our consumption of energy, materials, food and forests began to surface and serious questions were asked about global limits and the pursuit of single-minded economic development. Should we stop economic growth? What about the 1 billion people in extreme poverty? The UN’s World Commission on Environment and Development in 1987 resolved this issue in theory by creating the idea of ‘sustainable development’. This suggested that we could grow ec...

What are the darkest secrets of Big 4 companies?

Major part of my career has been with a big 4. So I don’t know how it is to work in other companies. But lets see: They care a lot about their image. A lot. More than any other industry for sure. I have found mistake in other people’s final report on a few occasions. Technical mistakes. I think all of us find mistakes in past reports all the time. Managers rely a lot on junior team member’s work who are not experienced or lack knowledge. Managers like people who do not ask too many questions. In most occasions managers and partners get involved in the report stage to check the language and anything obviously wrong with the report. Big 4 often bend its rules for big clients. And if times are bad, then also for smaller clients :) Each big 4 uses other big 4’s research articles and reports all the time. But they will never mention it. Most of the big 4 employees has no idea what they are doing. There is a template used for almost all type of work. So an outsider may think that the...

How can supply chains be improved ?

Supply chain optimization through software solutions The appearance of   innovative supply chain software solutions , with embedded analytics and machine learning, is nowadays transforming supply chains due to a strategic opportunity to impact the bottom line. Such solutions provide logistics operators with the opportunity to switch transport means dynamically reacting to the events in real-time, the possibility to use more cost-effective and greener alternatives — barges and railways, whenever it’s appropriate, and at the same time preserve the option of switching back to trucks. It de-stresses and de-risks the supply chain and brings costs down for transport operators and their customers. You may read more about   How to Reduce Supply Chain Risks Gartner digital supply chain survey   states that 62% of supply chain specialists anticipate that in two years at least half of their corporate revenue will be generated digitally. However, only 25% of them admit...

LAHORE:  In a letter written to the Lahore High Court chief justice, the pioneer of Pakistan’s nuclear programme Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan claimed that former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf, under the influence of the United States, had pressured on him to read a statement written by him [Musharraf] on the television. The appearance of   innovative supply chain software solutions , with embedded analytics and machine learning, is nowadays transforming supply chains due to a strategic opportunity to impact the bottom line. Transportation management system (TMS) and risk management While the companies want to become digital, the disconnect with current technology architectures is still great. Will Pakistan ever become a developed country?

Will Pakistan ever become a developed country? Yes. Pakistan can become a developed country, far more developed than India, even when India is far ahead right now. For this Pakistan government has to take some hard decisions and policy changes. There are some short term steps and some long term. Remember that India was near bankrupt in 1991 and today is hugely successful - long way to go still but blooming. (There are some comparisons to India which are inevitable but the comparison is not to demean Pakistan; rather to show the way to emulate.) Cut down on India rhetoric:   Far too much importance is given to India and especially Indian Defence purchases (India has S-400, India has SU-30s, India is going to get Rafael’s,etc.) What India does is India’s business. There is no need to match and frankly Pakistan can never achieve parity. Focus on own people:   A nation of happy people is a nation that is powerful and attractive for investments. Internal growth and devel...

How easy is it for tourists to get a job in Canada?

How easy is it for tourists to get a job in Canada? I see you’re in Zambia so I’m going to answer based on that. I am going to assume you are trying to get a job in Canada by applying from outside Canada but are not in Canada looking for a job. The answer is: it is VERY difficult if not impossible. This has nothing to do with you or your skills or the job you are seeking. It is because of employment regulations in Canada. Employment regulations in Canada DO NOT ALLOW an employer to offer a job to someone outside Canada without first PROVING that no one in Canada can do that job. This requires extensive advertising and an application for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). To obtain an LMIA, the employer must advertise the position widely for at least month and then wait an additional two months for processing. In addition to advertising costs, the employer must pay $1,100 in processing fees. Even if the employer applies for an LMIA, if Employment and Social Develop...
